Female Bodybuilding Interview of the Month

June 2010 Q&A interview with NPC Women's Bodybuilding Competitor Hayley McNeff.
Editor's Note:
Special thanks to Hayley for taking the time to speak with All photos and video courtesy of Hayley McNeff. Hello Hayley, Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to share a bit about yourself with readers! Would you please tell us a little bit about yourself? How old are you? Where are you from? Current Residence? Relationship Status? Family Life?

Hayley: I am a very driven, intense, young bodybuilder who just turned 22. I just graduated from UMass Amherst with a Bachelors degree in Psychology with a minor in Anthropology and Sociology. I am single, and living in Amherst for the next year. Both my parents live in Massachusetts, and my sister and brother live in New York, where I am moving in a year. What is your current profession?

Hayley: Well, I just graduated UMass, so I have been a full-time student for the past four years. I am going to get a job in the psychology field after I am done competing this summer. How did you get involved in the sport of Women's Bodybuilding?

Hayley: I went on MySpace and saw my first female bodybuilder ever! I didn't even know bodybuilding existed until I saw Sheila Bleck and Carla Salotti. Immediately I wanted to look like them! I went to the gym the next day and the rest is history!

Female Bodybuilder Hayley McNeff What do you enjoy about being a bodybuilder?

Hayley: Being huge! Lol, having muscles! And all the percs you get from having muscles! How does your friends, family and the general public react to your physique?

Hayley: They love it! I have good reactions from everyone. My family was not too happy about it at the beginning, but after I won my first two shows, all of a sudden they became supportive. lol What is your long-term goal in the sport of bodybuilding?

Hayley: I want to at least turn Pro. It would be great to be Ms. Olympia, but that was never my number one goal. I want to fill out my frame as much as I can, get as big as I possibly can by myself, and turn Pro. If I do anything more, great! Would you please share your competition history with us?

Hayley: Won my class and the overall title in the Delaware State and the East Coast Classic/Maryland state, both August, 2009.

Hayley: Yes! I am currently dieting for Team Universe for July 10th where I could be eligible to win my IFBB Pro card. What is your current height, weight during off-season and contest?

Hayley: I am 5'2", my weight is around 150lbs off-season at about 13-14% body fat, maybe a couple lbs more. Last year I was 122lbs and 125lbs on-stage. I will probably be between 125lbs and 130lbs on stage this year. What do you consider your best feature?

Hayley: Hmm... Probably my legs... People have always said they're big, although actually, I think my best feature may be my overall symmetry at this point. What kind of goals have you set for yourself in 2010?

Hayley: I would love to win the overall at Team Universe and turn Pro this year! I will be 22 years old and it is my first national contest! After that, the goal is the same as it always is! Get as big as possible while keeping my body fat relatively low for next years competition! Would you please tell us a little about your workout schedule? Contest and during the Off-Season? Does it vary much?

Hayley: Off-season I work out four days a week. I bike everywhere instead of driving, so I get cardio that way. But I do not do additional cardio in the gym, off-season. Contest season; I am in the gym 3-5 hours a day with cardio and weight training. Do you have a favorite exercise?

Hayley: Whatever I am lifting heaviest at the time! Be it squats, bent over t-bar rows, bent over barbell rows, or leg press. But generally I don't have a favorite body part to train or favorite exercise. I love them all! lol

Female Bodybuilder Hayley McNeff Do you have a coach or anyone who you work with?

Hayley: Yes. Dave Pulcinella does my diet. And Chris Zimmerman helps me with diet and training stuff as well. Without the two of them, I don't know where I'd be! What is a day-in-the-life of Hayley McNeff like?

Hayley: Hhaha. Offseason: wake up, eat, go to class, stock up on food for the day at the dining commons (meaning take all their grilled chicken and wheat pasta lol), maybe go to the library and do homework, go home, get ready for the gym, train, go home, shower, obviously eat a million times, go to bed. Repeat!

During contest prep: wake up, cardio, then eat, cook, sit around all day being exhausted and hungry lol, go to the gym, come back home, then do more cardio at home, eat a million times, sleep lol. Repeat!

I pretty much eat, sleep and breathe bodybuilding all year long. If I don't, I don't gain muscle as quickly as I need to. What are your hobbies and interests outside of the bodybuilding world?

Hayley: I am passionate about being a psychologist. That is why I am going to graduate school for clinical psychology where I will then become a psychologist after I graduate. I love listening to people and helping them. I am also a very social person; I love being with friends and constantly talking with people. I also enjoy having roommates/housemates. I am perfectly happy going to the gym everyday with my best friend/roommate and talking to a million people per day.

Female Bodybuilder Hayley McNeff What's currently on your iPod?

Hayley: Oh god, everything! Mainly rock stuff like Breaking Benjamin, Staind, etc. But there's some pop on there, some Tori Amos, Alannis Morissette, Eminem, and some other random stuff. What are your "Top 5" favorite movies? Favorite actor and/or actress?

Hayley: Too many to make into a top 5! I love comedy's and chick flicks! I am a huge movie fan. Favorite actress... probably Kate Beckinsale because of her role in Underworld or Angelina Jolie because of her role as Laura Croft in Tomb Rader. Who are your role models? And/or who do you look up to in your life?

Hayley: Cathy LeFrancois is. Denise Masino, and any other female bodybuilder who has managed to gain a lot of mass while keeping their femininity. Also, Dave Pulcinella. He has the hardest work ethic of anyone I have ever seen and has helped and inspired me to do everything that I've done. Seeing the way he trains, eats, lives, showed me how to do the same, with my own spin on things. To him I am eternally grateful for the support and guidance he has given me. I will always look up to him. What advice do you have for women who would like to get involved in the sport of bodybuilding?

Hayley: Do not take the harsh drugs! It just ruins the sport for the rest of us! Who are your favorite bodybuilders?

Hayley: Soo soo many! Cathy LeFrancois, Candy Canary, Denise Masino. They're beautiful AND huge! Any female bodybuilder who has become huge while still looking like a beautiful woman is my hero.

Also, Dave Pulcinella, for his conditioning, Jose Raymond, and Aaron Singerman, because they're all cool dudes! How can people contact you? Do you have a website?

Hayley: Not yet, but I will soon. MySpace and Facebook for now.
